From Vienna to Hollywood

Watch the live concert video on Dan Zhu’s performance of the brilliant violin concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold

Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s only violin concerto was premiered by the great violinist Jascha Heifetz. This romantic virtuosic concerto has its unique place in the whole violin repertoire. Korngold once praised as “the Mozart of 20th century” by his childhood mentor Gustav Mahler, dedicated this concerto to his widow Alma Mahler after its completion in 1945. The four main themes through the three movements of this concerto were all based on the motif of Korngold’s film music, Another Dawn (1937), Juarez (1939), Anthony Adverse (1936), the Prince and the Pauper (1937). The Oscar winning composer from a child prodigy in Vienna, became one of the most important and influential composers in Hollywood history. He was a noted pianist and composer of classical music, along with music for Hollywood films, and the first composer of international stature to write Hollywood scores. Live from Dan Zhu’s performance on this brilliant violin concerto.
